EDUCATIONAL ECOLOGY TRIPS:
Save The Rainforest Inc., a sister group of ICRN, offers the possibility
for teachers, high school students, or anyone interested in ecology to
visit these sites on summer field trips. These ecology trips are the best
way to experience the reality of the tropics. The conditions there are
quite rustic, but this is an affordable way to visit a rainforest with a
group of your students, or a group of teachers. Once on site there are
various opportunities to observe the meaning of bio-diversity, to learn
about local economic issues, to experience the culture of the area, or to
better identify with the struggle that the indigenous people have with the
modern world.
People often return with more questions than answers, but are then
usually more willing to make a commitment to help save the rainforest,
knowing that their efforts do so, make a concrete difference.
During one trip to the Amazon in Ecuador, we visited the Quichua
Indians, who have adopted ecotourism as a sustainable alternative to
petroleum exploration on their land. With the help of the Jatun Sacha
Foundation, they are ensuring that their land is better protected and their
future better planned. The foreign students, teachers and scholars who
venture to these places provide a source of revenue for the community.
Over 4500 teachers and students have taken two weeks ecology trips
since 1990.
Rates vary depending on the location. Available locations: Costa Rica, Panama, Belize, Ecuador, Honduras.
